My stereo will only pick up certain cds i have tried altering the pot on the back of the laser but it still will not pick up certain cds. if i move pot to far it will not pick up any cd.

The reason your compact disc player won't work is because it needs a replacement laser"they do wear out". The pot on the laser shold not be ajusted it is factory set and nothing can be gained by ajusting ,What you can do to cure a suspect laser is to blow dust out using aerosol compressed air and clean lens with a cotton bud,this proccess should always be carried out first before suspecting something more sinister.
