Citroen Xantia 1.9TD 1997 R - blower with a mind of its own!?

When I first start the car the blower seems to work ok but after a minute or 2 the blower speed gradually decreases until it blows nothing. Every now and then it sounds like it's trying to get going again but fails. Some days it doesn't even get started. On rare occasions during a journey if I turn it off for 10 minutes and then back on again I can get it to go for 30 seconds to a minute or so before it gradually winds down again. Any ideas?

My friend and I both had Xantias (N reg.) with the same problem. He replaced the switch at the bottom of the ignition barrel - problem solved. I didn't want to spend money so I used a different solution. Switch on the engine. Do not switch on any lights, wipers, or any other electrical equipment. Wait for 1 minute, then switch the blower to the first setting. It works - and it stays on. Well, mine does.
