emachine T2542: Can I get the broken CD pieces out & save my CD drive?

I have an emachine T2542. A CD just crunched and broke in the CD drive: made nasty noise; I stopped it right away; the CD drawer opened; an approx. 1/2" x 2" piece is gone from the CD that broke, and I did fish out a fingernail-size piece but can't see the rest which is deep inside the CD player. I haven't closed the CD drawer or tried to use the CD player since it happened. If I turn off the computer and get the pieces out, any possibility the drive will still work? Okay, I gotta try it anyway, now how do I get in there? Then is there a best way to get the pieces out? What else should I do to try to save it?
On the CD drawer it says "Compact Disc-Rewritable-Ultra Speed." It is NOT also a DVD player, only a CD drive. My computer is an emachine T2542 (tower).
Thanks muchly for your help!

I gave it a shot and it worked! I'm burning cd's again. Yeah! I shook the tower upside down with the cd drawer open and pieces fell out, then opened the tower and just got the cd drive loose. I didn't feel comfortable starting it up again until I put the pieces of the cd together and saw I had near enough of a whole cd. Peace! K
