Screen is dark,but icons are still there if a light is held close all functions are on the screen but backlight is gone?

Although Wit may very well be correct, I would certainly try accessing the bios screen first or into safe mode, as an outside chance it might only be you have choosen a very dark 'power saving ' option

The power converter may have gone if its across the whole screen. If this is following any spillage or water ingress, you may get away with drying it out (esp the plug that goes to the display, as these ofter 'track' if wet.

Otherwise, the cheapest route is to buy another tosh 1200 from ebay and swap hard drives!
