how do you remove the drive gear from the clutch assembly on a Mcculloch Gl?

Mcculloch 550 gladiator hedge trimmer how do you replace the drive gear in the clutch assembly
Robin thornton, September 2010
Swoo has the answer, just did it myself. Just to add, there seems to be locktite on the thread so put some on when assembling. Also, if you have any teeth left on the drive gear a 16mm socket fits onto it very nicely. That's a multitooth socket not a hexagon.

I had this problem with a Mcculloch Virginian model: I made a 'key' to hold the clutch flywheel in place with the two holes it has in it and using an engine block stud extractor, I turned the stripped pinion nut anticlockwise.

You have to remove the gear box and underneath on the cluth plate you will see a small hole, put a screw driver through hole and clamp the drive gear with mole grips and unscew the drive gear. Knock off bearings with a punch and rebuild with new drive gear.

hope this helps

I have the same problem and got in touch with McCulloch who were of no use whatsoever, how did you solve it?

The Mcculloch website may help. Check the product sheet bottom right corner.
