Why do my Citroen Xantia key batteries go flat within hours?

My Citroen Xantia 1.9TD 1997 car key batteries started going flat from new after just a few presses about a year ago. Both keys are the same so I have to open the car door (n/s only - French car!) with the key. I think my keys are known as "IMM standard key"; they only unlock/lock the doors. Any ideas please anyone?

Many thanks for your suggestions. I checked them all out but to no avail. Still the batteries go flat after only a day or so. Switch is working ok and the red light comes on when it is pressed. Any body else out there got any ideas please!

are you putting them in the right way round? un do small screw and look for moisture inside, dry if need be, make sure tiny on/off switch is going to off position, clear any dirt/dust,i had similar fault, too dear for new key for me, so i took out master alarm switch key its under bonnet in front of passenger side top right corner above brake fluid reservoir round hole just twist it out,now you have no alarm to set, just lock up with key and open with key,no alarm to worry about or batteries. have ago, easy peasy, good luck.
