HOW DO I DELETE OR HIDE FILE EXTENSIONS?

I WOULD LIKE TO DELEETE FILE EXTENSIONS (jpeg, .dot, gif, etc), WHICH LOOK UGLY AND TAKE UP SPACE. I AM WORKING IN WORD & EXCEL IN WINDOWS XP.

If you mean the showing of extentions in Windows Explorer (i.e. so that you only see 'MyDoc' instead of 'MyDoc.doc') then you can do this as follows:

1. Open Windows Explorer (shortcut key is Windows Key + E, otherwise right-click on 'Start' button and choose 'Explore').

2. In Windows Explorer, click on 'Tools' in the menu bar, and then choose 'Folder Options' from that menu.

3. In the new window that comes up, click on the tab titled 'View'

4. Scroll down the list a little bit untill you see the item called 'Hide extensions for known file types' and make sure there is a tick in the box to the left (add one by clicking in the box)

5. Hit 'Ok' to exit and voila, no more file extensions!
