DELL won't turn on?

I have a DELL latitude D510, that won't start?
the battery was getting very hot so have ordered another, it still won't start, without battery. connected direct to adapter.
does it need the battery to make the cicuit or could it have caused more damage to the computer.

Normaly, you don't need to have the battery in place to use on the charger.

If it only get power with both the charger AND the battery, you have some hardware fault.

That fault may have caused the battery to overheat.
The overheating battery may have caused some more damage.

Have both the old and new batteries checked to make sure that they are OK.

Have a technician check your computer for any damage.
Fixing the computer can be very costly if the faulty component(s) are hard to find or welded in place.
It may be cheaper to get a new computer.
A new computer will be more performant than your actual one.

The power adapter has been checked and is OK.
The power light only comes on if both connected, but tells me battery is duff,?
(3)-- (green light with hazard flash across it)

1) battery connected-- no power
2) mains connected-- no power
3) battery and mains -- power but as above

you might need to check out the power lead, make sure that its working fine, and it has no breaks in it, try a different lead in it, if you can get one,
