engine starts ok but black smoke emissions and struggles to go up hill

It is difficult to determine but would start by checking fault codes,maybe have a look at your intake system- EGR valves,hoses and pipes for leaks/splits, make sure filters are clean and up to date,you could try a fuel conditioner to help clean out your fuel system.
