The hatchback lid lock on my 1998 Ford mondeo doesn't seem to engage when I push the lid shut . If I push a screwdriver blade into the lock when the boot is open I can get the catch to click over , the lock can then be opened by pushing the release button on the back of right hand side the car, when this is done I can close the boot lid , push down hard and it will engage, but I don't want to be doing this all the time . How can I make it work each time??

it sounds like you may need a new locking mechanism. As in the part on the actual car, not the bar on the boot. They are fairlt easy to change, and you should ba able to find one at a breakers yard somewhere. It sounds like it may be sticking, so even soaking it in WD40 for a while may promt it to work again. They are however linked to an electrical solonoid. if the other suggestions do not work, it may be wise to have someone look at that.
