my ford mondeo 1.8 LX central locking does not work with the remote, new batteries have been fitted. I have been told it can be reprogrammed using the ignition key, does anyone know how to do this

similar to my problem... 95 nissan pathfinder. factory installed alarm, light is steady blinking in the off postion, will not reset. remote does not work(new batteries installed). 2 buttons on the remote, one for lock, one for ?(it has a light symbol or is that a horn symbol) *yes i'm blonde and female*
the battery on the car was just changed, and the problem seems to have started then although the remote had been acting up

any ideas to help would be appreciated
