acer aspire 3004wlmi RAM problems?

hi im a bit of a techno fobe so please help i have 256mb ddr ram on my laptop but when i download updates its tell me i havent enough space when i go to my computer and look at system it tells me i only have 198mb how can i free up space or restore the 256 mb i need i have deleted cookies i have an up to date virus protction not mant saved things like games quite a few photos but nothoing great you no any help wouyld be great regards jon

you are confusing the Ram with Hdd space, You need to click on start > Accessories > Tools (system tools) chose the disk cleaner.
from the same menue it will be a good idea to Defragment the drive And also look under Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and remove all the programs u do not use.

I suspect that your PC has reserved that memory for video RAM. I also assume that you are running XP SP2. If that's the case the extra RAM won't help much. I suggest that you install another 256MB in order to have enough to run your system.
