where is the thermostat on a w reg vw polo1.4 se which hose?

in which hose is stat and which end 2 hoses have plastic housings on which 1 is the stat in thanks

Follow the top radiator hose to the black plastic housing on the side of the engine block. The thermostat is behind this.
