Remotes can be light sensitive - if you haven't knocked it and it's clean try this; Put in a dark cupboard over night, when you use it the next day don't have the lights on. Sounds daft but often works. The sensor in the tv/vcr itself could be the problem and nothing to do with the remote. Try switching every thing off at mains, taking the batts out, leave for 5 mins then retry.
