Sounds as if the laser lens needs cleaned,This is an easy job just remove the outer cover,and look for where the disc drawer rectracts into, you should see a small clear perspex lens sitting on a carrier, clean this using an cotton(ear)bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol or tape head cleaner, apply only gentle pressure.
