John, the one you say is in a cradle is not a pump, it's a fuel filter my friend....the sender unit/guage and pump are inside the tank....and is removed easily...remove boot carpet..remove inspection cover, remove fuel pipes and elec connection....remove outer retaining ring (black plastic, unscrew) then you can lift out the sender and float.....followed by the pump which you can give a strong but gentle quarter turn anti-clockwise......and pop out she comes!!! the pump can be dismantled too...if it is just the pump/motor you need to replace...these are £56...not cheap!! Bosch or similar!

the way to do it is to remove the carpet in the boot and you will see there is a black inspection plate remove the plate now you will see a grey "bottle lid" looking twist anticlockwise off, you are now inside the petrol tank the pump is in front of you remove pipe lines attached and twist the pump anti-clockwise and remove.

there are 2 , the main one to go is in the petrol tank , lift out your spare wheel and you should see a circular part that when you undo it , the whole assembly can lift out.
I am not sure where the other is

There's one pump in the fuel tank itself, but the main one hangs in a cradle just below the tank unit.
