How can I get the TV out of standby?

The standby timer is constantly flashing.
The TV does not respond to any controls on the TV
The TV does not respond to any controls on the remote.
The TV is a 32" Sony Trinitron

Sony Trinitrons have a nasty trait of having issues with the contacts on their power switches. In the many cases where this needed to be fixed it was very inexpensive. It sounds as though you have an issue with the on/off starter ... or a problem with the power supply ....either one is quite cheap to fix.
