i have a citroen saxo VTR but it wont go into gear when the engine is running could it be a problem with the gearbox or the clutch?

check gearbox oil level,and check clutch fluid first. rule out the simple things 1st of all. it may be the clutch friction plate is worn and is not gripping the flywheel. when you depress the clutch pedal and then start to bring your foot back up, does the clutch bite very quickly? check gearbox, and clutch linkages esp clutch cable,if the clutch pedal feels loose.

Probably the clutch if it goes into gear with the engine off,but first check the clutch cable or hydraulics.
