I can't get to the menu because I can't get it to power on. When I hit the power button the display shows safe and nothing else happens.

This means you have the child lock on ... it stops little fingers from pressing the buttons. It will work fine if you use the remote control. In the menu, most models have the option to turn the child lock 'off'
