My Yamaha 85 on my boat isnt spitting any water?

The engine is heating up because it isnt sucking any water into it inorder to keep it cooled and running properly, it is now sputtering and missing, when ran on water for 2 minutes it starts to burn and smoke. How do I get the water to pull? What could be the problem? This motor is on the back of my skiff.

the impellor in the water pump may have worn itself away on the stones, sandand gravel drawn in in low water undo side of housing and check easy to replace make sure you buy all the O rings and seals

The Engine has a water pump located in the area of the lower unit (FOOT). It is likely to be faulty if the engine has ever been started with the engine out of the water or without a flush attachment. Also it is likely to fail over time. It is recommended to be changed every 2 years or 200 hours. Removal of the lower unit is required.

The water pump has siezed and the reason for spluttering is the limp back home feature which restricts revs and damage. Get a new water pump and hopefully you haven't caused too much damage elsewhere..

if used in salt water, cooling system may be blocked with salt crystals or coroded if it is ally, try to flush with fresh water, failing that, try to feed wire down cooling jet to see if it is blocked, outboards should be run in fresh water after any time in salt water.
