My laptop will read manufacturers CDs but not read home produced?

My Toshiba Satellite laptop will read manufacturers CDs, but not read 'home' produced CDs and will not write to them either. Any ideas?

It may be that the CD drive reads either + or - cdrs but not both. Check the drive manufacturers specs to see if this is the case and then only use + or - cdrs accordingly.
