When start knob is set to required position and pulled out the water fills to the required amount and machine starts wash cycle but the timer does not advance through the cycle.In other words ,the machine just keeps washing forever!

almost certainly NOT the timer causing any problem. Check and rule out all other possibilities such as pressure switch, heater, thermostat, motor etc. before considering the timer. Theyre pretty sturdy items not prone to frequent failure and quite expensive.
