i just bought a renault espace 2.2dt-x diesel S reg, and the steering is very stiff and when you go around corners the steering wheel motion is very juddery when returning to the straight ahead position.Has anyone had this problem and what was the outcome.

If these are the symptoms, then yes: Steering smooth to a point then wheel movement appears to get stiff as goes through tighter turns, if even tighter turns then free again. i.e. as you move the sterring wheel through a particular point turning requires more force, then doesn't again.

Took mine into local Renault Minute dealer (always cheaper than main dealer but nearly always have access to main delaer facilities).

There is a universal joint somewhere in the steering column, which like many things Espace is difficult to get at. This apparently was not moving correctly. It wasn't seizing as such but was not moving properly. Following lubrication all was OK again. This was over 4 months ago. They said at teh time that if lubrication wasn't enough then it would require a replacement, which would be expensive £1K plus - presumably engine removal time again.
