How do I add a user directory to the path string?

How do I add a user directory to the path string? This means that I coud type a batch file name and have it execute. I would rather not add my commands to a directory that is already in the path string in case I have to reinstall stuff.

right click my computer on desktop, select Properties.
Select Advanced tab, click Environment Variables button, slect PATH for user variables then click the Edit button - add your path at the end of the current string (after the ; and add a ; at the end
