My 9 year old dryer will start on it's own for no apparent reason. Have moved the dial to off and it will still start sometimes on its own. Have to leave to door open when we leave so that it will not start, overheat and burn the house down. Any help would be great.

If your dryer is starting in the "off" position on the timer, it sounds like your timer contacts are not working properly. You can try wiggling the knob of the timer in the "off" position to see if it stops then, but is seems that the contact in the timer is welded closed thus not cutting your power when you shut your dryer off.
