rattle rear brake handbrake?

i have volkswagen passat. whilst driving i can hear a rattle from the driver side rear brake, any bump in road. foot on brakes a slight slap, rattle stops, also if i put on handbrake slightly rattle stops

The rear disc pads have anti rattle shims in them - stainless steel 'runners' that fit between the pad and the caliper body. I guess one or both of them has been left out!
