My Dyson has been working without any problems. I empty the canister and clean filter etc. No apparent blockages but nothing happens when I plug in and switch on the power. No warning smells or any other difficulties before this.

I was hovering with my dc05 it had only ben turned on seconds and it sounded like it was slowing down and had an electrical smell coming from it so before it did anything else I turned it off and I don't was to turn it back on im scared lol

Many thanks Neil, mine suffered the same problem and the cause was identical. One of the twin cores of flex had broken about an inch from the plug.
Seems that the rewind mechanism was too strong for the flex used.
As you say, plug chopped off and replaced, working like new.

I inherited a DC05 that wasn't working for no apparent reason.
After pulling it apart I found live power at every brown AND blue terminal and connection point (switch on and off) everywhere along the cable except where I'd plugged it into the extension cord. The moulded on plug was the culprit. I wasted hours doing this mostly due to the retractable cable falling apart . The lesson I have learned from this – don’t trust moulded on plugs. If an appliance fails without obvious evidence of failure or burnout then save yourself a lot of time - chop the plug off and replace it.
It works like new.

On mine, it was the cable that had failed. Stripped off wheels, undid screws, opened up to show spade terminals on block. Took these off and checked (with a meter), and found the live feed was duff. Discon cable and spring ratchet feeder, added new (rated) cable to conn block I had, tested, ok. Refitted everything back, this time securing non-return cable to case with nylon ties attached to cable entry slot, and away we go. Looks like the motor not burned out yet. Cable now has to be stowed in a loose reel when not in use. Never did like the "in machine" storage because of overheating of the cable under load.

I thought my motor had gone, but it turned out to be the cable, which had split and caused a short. You need to get access to the cable drum, strip back the damaged cable, reterminate and hey presto.

Have same unit (DC05 Turbo). Sounds like the motor has gone. Or an issue with power cable/buton. Mine went a week or so ago - revved high during use, then cut out. Checked bin/filters etc, then nothing. Tried that night - rattling and a puff of smoke- then humming.
