Windscreen wiper fault!?

Please help if you can.

I have a 2001 Almera Tino which has developed a wiper fault,in a nutshell-when they are turned on,they work as expected-but they wont switch off when the wiper arm is returned to the off position-when the engine is turned off-they will stop & will stay off until the wiper arm is activated again.
