im having problems starting my car, sometimes it starts fine, other times it takes a lot more ticks of the ignition to start. i have a engine management light come up on my dashboard, got told it might be the fuel pump, but i know they are costly? any ideas of what to try before going ahead with the fuel pump please? thanks

Been told by whom?What car,engine size/year/fuel?Has it been code read?There are a number of good responders on this site,But accurate information will produce more accurate results.Sometimes that strange thing it does that is irrelevant to you is the key.
