Thermostat does sit roughly where u describe.Find the top radiator hose,Runs from engine bay/left to center right of engine, big hose, easy to spot.Where this hose connects to the engine is the thermostat housing(stat's inside)Three bolts,13mm spanner size if i remember. If the coolant is coming out of one of these, then I'd try adding a leak stopping solution,Wynns stop leak works for me.Failing that its housing off and new gaskets. Not a big job.
