How to fix timing on a Singer 457 zig zag?

My needle is not catching the bobbin thread. It was working fine and then while sewing I heard a thud like sound and machine stopped working. After that I couldn't get the needle thread or bobbin thread to work. Could you please send me info on how to fix the timing?

more than likely, the vertical top gear is broken. it's a pretty simple fix and you can find the part for about $10 USD.
