My HOOVER VISION HD eats socks?

My Hoover washing machine has started to eat socks. Each time I do a wash at least 1 small item disappears.
Is there anything I can do to fix this before calling out an engineer

wash small items in a pillow case with a draw string, check out filter and drain pump it in there somewhere
