how can i start up my computer?

when i try to start up i get the black screen asking how i want to start safe mode ect. but no matter what i put in it just returns to blck screen i run windows xp home ad. and the competer is 7 years old

When your computer starts up press F8 repetedly and when you get the options choose "last know good boot" and try from there.
