vauxhall astra 1.4 electric fault re lights & dash?

2 headlight bulbs 'went' on front drivers side. I replaced and lights now fine. However, whenever I put the lights on, the dashboard / clock light goes off. Headlights off - dash lights back on. NB Fault also present while bulbs were defunct. Any ideas

make sure the reostat is turned up fully as lights automatically dim when lights turned on. its the roller switch just below the light switch
