if the fuel pump is on its way out because my car stops suddenly when i drive it and can i repair it do i have to buy a new one

Hi there need to know if its petrol or diesel due to the fact fuel pump might be in the tank or bolted to the body under the vehicle near the subframe,some diagnosis might need to be carried to detemine the what is the problem, hope this helps.
