How do I get my lawn tractor to start?

I have a Murray Lawn tractor (Model# 46377x7A) with a 19.0 HP briggs & Stratton, 4-cycle engine (model# 42A797). All of a sudden I can't get it to start anymore. It ran fine in the past. It seemed to me like it was a lack of fuel problem. It only starts when I pour gasoline into the carburator and it runs for about 5 seconds. So I checked the fuel lines and the fuel filter. They're okay. However, the carbutator seems not to have fuel going into it. There is a diaphgram between the fuel line and the carburator. could that have gone bad? Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?
thanks

Rick, I'm very impressed with your knowledge in mechanics. I followed your advise. My tractor has not only started but it's now running better than it did in the last year and a half. Thank for sharing the knowledge.

The rectanglar block on the front of your carb is a fuel pump.
If the lines going to it are cracked, or if the diaphram you see is brittle it will now work properly. You can buy a fuel pump rebuild kit to repair it. There are 2 different kits. P/N 693502 used on 4 screw mount carbs, or P/N 393397 used on 3 screw mount carbs, depending on which is on your engine.

Sounds like the needle and seat in the carberator are stuck closed not letting the fuel into the bowl .....if you have let tractor set up with fuel in it the fuel turns to a laquer type film and will need to pull carb bowl and clean it out and make sure the float is going up and down and the neecle and seat are working correctly .............happens all the time .
After repair be sure to add a gas additive or be sure to runn it out of fuel before letting it set up for any lengh of time.
