How do I repair my Bissell Powerwash Proheat ?

A relative recently borrowed my Bissell Powerwash Proheat, and said that when he was cleaning his carpet, the machine seemed to work OK, but there was a popping sound and the motor stopped. the red heater light stayed on however, but it just wont work now. I am wondering if the heater was allowed to run dry and cut off the current to the motor, and if so, would need to be replaced. can you please confirm my diagnosis, or if I am wrong, what else could it be?
Thankyou

It's been a few years since I used is so bear with me:I replaced the power brush and that working fine but if memory serves me correct isn't tha cleaner supposed to suck up dirt and thus I should be emptying a container of dirt water?I just used it and the water container is completely empty.

I would first check that the drive belt is OK. On the LH side is a small panel towards the front. Carefully insert a screwdriver and lever this up. The small panel should pop out. This exposes the motor where a smooth belt drives the brushes. Check that this is OK and turns the brushes if turned by hand. If this is broken see http://www.partmaster.co.uk/cgi-bin/search.pl?parts_search=s&o_search=1&brand=&model=1698+Powerwash+Proheat&part= for a belt. If it is OK, try running the machine with this panel removed and see if the motor spins. If not, I would suspect the motor. See http://www.4bissell.co.uk/cgi-bin/search.pl?query=PUMP&search.x=0&search.y=0&search=s for Bissel Spares.

Hope this helps
