Why does my sewing machine sew by itself?

My Frister Rossman Cub 4 sewing machine has suddenly started sewing, fast, by itself, without me pressing the foot pedal. I can only stop it by switching off the power. Help please!

It seems a capacitor had failed in the foot pedal. It was a simple repair by a person who knew what to do. And they were a sewing machine repair person, not an exorcist - as in other situations, no need for supernatural explanations.
