Clicking sound when connecting battery to a 1992 firebird?

There is a clicking sound on the left side of engine when neg battery terminal is connected. Battery was dead and I tried to charge it.Battery took a charge but not strong enough to start engine.clicking started when battery was being charged.Do I just put in a new battery. Is the relay bad and or because of battery. Starter is 4 or 5 years old. What is causing the clicking and how can I stop it. Thanks

Low battery voltage can cause clicking of relays ..need to check battery charge before replacing starter and all connections if battery is load tested and its ok either connection to starter is bad or a bad starter ..
