my screen has gone almost completly dark what do you think is wrong?

my computer has gone damn near black screen and i can barely make out anything please help it is a presario 500 from compaq i have adjusted the brightness to the max

If it's a LCD screen the backlight behind the screen has failed, get a new monitor, the're cheap enough now.
