Before you do anything to the gearbox have a look at the two cables that link the gearlever to the gearbox. One may be broken. the usual problem is wear in one or more of the rubber bushes at the end of the cables, (or the bush having disintegrated). Rubber bushes not available separately so replace the cable assy if reqd.
