We also have the same problem but ours is due to us not having a codes as it is a multi regional dvd player

That's a coincidence, I've just been given one to try fix which has the same problem. Took the cover off and looked inside but machine doesn't look very servicable. However, when I plugged it in, switched it on and inserted a dvd while the cover was off I noticed the dvd wasn't turning. The drive motor appeared to be making a sound as if it was turning but the dvd remained stationary. I am contuing to investigate.
