Whats involved in changing a clutch on a 1998 vectra?

My Vauxhall Vectra's clutch has gone. It will still drive and change gear without any noise.
I'm told that the thrust bearing has gone and to replace the whole clutch at the same time.
Can it be done on roadside and how long should it take with a mate (a mechanic) and whats involved?
Thanks
Tony.
