How do I adjust my handbrake on Citroen Relay 1.9d 2000?

I have just fitted new shoes to the rear and noticed that the handbrake cable was longer on the near side. When I had the shoes fitted in place the cable was so short that it was operating the handbrake without the lever being raised. The offside is OK but the nearside shoes are binding, turning only about a half turn freely and getting hot and smelly. How do I loosen off the handbrake cable so I can get the cable adjusted equally on both sides and stop the nearside binding. I would appreciate any help. Thanks

done
also check handbrake cable is not siezed by pulling and pushing inner cable through outer. if it doesnt move freely you need a new cable. check both sides.

i take it all shoe mechanisms working and fitted correctly? if so, look underneath on drivers side in front of rear wheel up near sill there should be 2 13mm nuts on handbrake cable. loosen first one (locknut) and slacken next nut to loosen cable. dont forget to tighten locknut when finished.
