How can I fix my tape player?

to stop chewing tapes. Sometimes if I fastforward, or even just play the tape, it will be all chewed. I know for sure it is not the tape, since I have tryed numerous tapes in the player. So is there something inside I can mend?

change the drive belts, check nothing is blocking the mechanism like paper from torn cassette lables, clean the mode switch.
ww.repairfaq.org - has a good step by step vcr repair procedure.
it is offline at present but will be back soon I 've heard.
