how can i fix my brake lights on my vw golf gti mk 4?

my brake lights don't work on my mk4 golf, i've checked the fuses, bulbs and all seem to be okay and i've checked all wiring and plugs leading to the brake lights but is there anywhere else i should be looking?

You don't mention the switch that turns them on - often placed high up above the brake pedal just above the pivot.
