How can I unjam a vcr tape?

I have a Magnavox 4 head vcr that has a tape stuck in it. How can I remove it ?

turn off power, unplug, take off top cover, cut video tape rather than trying to remove parts, take out cassette, use spliceing tape to repair video, if repairable
