Jaguar autogearbox fault?

My jag xk8 hesitated when I accelerated then wouldnt pick up or go up hills "gearbox fault" warning displayed. reverse fine. eventually limped home then tried to engage gearbox but nasty noises so switched off! Any suggestions out there???
