How can i remove the virus rom my laptop?

My laptop was attacked with a virus then froze so I had to leave it to naturally run out of battery and shut down. On turning it back on I am unable to open internet explorer. An alert is posted on the screen:

ASSERT IN LSP
original==reinterpret_cast(instance->org_startup_)
capture\lsp\nolsp\wsp_patches.cpp:202

Please help!!

Laptop is a Dell Inspiron1300

To be on the safe side i would run the pc in safe mode and scan for any virus,s and malware as this does also run chkdsk to correct any errors. also clear out all temp files and cookies by using cccleaner and this fails you can try run cmd.exe with administrative previlliges and type

netsh winsock reset
+restart
my advice is to use firefox not ie as i find firefox is alot safer and stable

It's not a virus it's Google desktop that causes the problem.

Delete Google desktop and it will sort your problem out.

I have the same, I guess it's a virus? It didn't freeze my laptop, but it keeps popping up on my screen everytime after opening an email or web page? It hasn't bothered my laptop other than it it simply continues to pop up every 10 seconds and I have to either hit ABORT or IGNORE. What the heck is it? I've run every scan my virus protector has, but it doesn't recognize it as a problem??
