after waiting for the iron to heat up the iron is leaking water from the holes instead of steam what do you think is the problem

my sisters tefal pro express was doing the same, was getting hot water instead of steam coming out. the base unit was heating the water but the hot plate on the iron was not heating up. stripped down and found the contacts on the thermostat for the hot plate were dirty/rusted cleaned them up and its back working
